This technology is based on photovoltaic cells made from semiconductor materials that generate an electric current when exposed to sunlight. This process is known as the photovoltaic effect.

Residents of Merseyside have embraced this innovation for several reasons:

Solar panels reduce dependence on traditional energy sources like coal or gas. They are also invaluable when connecting to the conventional grid is impossible, for instance, after natural disasters.

The process of generating electricity this way is environmentally friendly, as it does not release greenhouse gases or other pollutants into the atmosphere.

It allows homeowners to save on energy bills and sometimes even earn money by selling surplus electricity back to the public grid, thanks to attractive government tariffs available across the country.

Solar panels are known for their durability and relatively low maintenance costs over their lifespan.

Therefore, throughout Liverpool and the wider Merseyside region, homeowners are installing solar panels either themselves or with the help of professional contractors. Using similar devices for water heating, known as solar thermal panels, is also popular in the county.

It is worth noting that there are three main types of photovoltaic solar panels: monocrystalline, polycrystalline, and hybrid. The last type is the most expensive but also the most efficient, as its design combines crystalline cells with a thin film layer that captures more energy. The cheapest option is polycrystalline panels. However, monocrystalline panels are more commonly used in Merseyside, as they offer a good balance of efficiency and reliability—a ‘golden mean’ in terms of price and quality.

The Situation in Merseyside

In Liverpool and its surrounding areas, there are many companies that provide solar panel installation services. They can be found on websites like Houzz, where, at the time of writing, there were around 20 listed contractors. The website also lists the most popular services related to this technology in the region:

Installation for eco-homes.

Water heating systems.

Repairs.

Cleaning.

Merseyside contractors typically offer all of these services, as competition drives them to meet every customer demand.

Advice from Liverpool Specialists

Local experts in the field offer some advice for those who want to use solar panels effectively for the long term:

Consider the orientation and shading of your roof. Ideally, it should be south-facing with minimal shade. If your roof isn’t suitable, an installer might suggest a more practical solution, such as ground-mounted panels.

Maintain your panels as needed—clean them periodically and monitor their performance.

Look into available rebates and preferential tariffs. In the UK, the government offers some financially attractive options and guarantees, most notably the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG).

An Example of the Technology in Action

One of the schemes mentioned above is a group-buying programme that was utilised in Liverpool, particularly in 2023. During its first round, solar panels were installed in 585 homes; all that was required was to register interest in the programme, reports the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority website. The programme was designed to help those wishing to switch to renewable energy save even more by leveraging group purchasing power.

The scheme, named Solar Together, enabled participants to save around 33% on a typical 14-panel installation. However, some went beyond the standard solution, opting to also install home battery storage and electric vehicle charging points.

This group-buying programme is a collaboration between the authorities of Liverpool, its districts, and other areas in the region (Halton, St Helens, Knowsley, Sefton, Wirral) and independent experts iChoosr. The goal of this partnership is to make the transition to green energy simpler and cheaper, as well as to help the city achieve its previously stated net-zero carbon target. They aim to reach this by 2040, ahead of the UK government’s national target of 2050.

How does it work?

First, an individual or organisation registers their interest in solar panel installation online.

Next, an auction is held among pre-vetted UK photovoltaic suppliers. They offer their best prices, which are significantly lower than the standard market rate because they are bidding for a bulk order.

In the next stage, registered homeowners receive a personalised recommendation via email based on the details provided during registration.

Once the customer accepts the recommendation, a technical survey of the property is conducted. If an agreement is reached with the contractor, an installation date can be chosen.

Participants can also use a support service via phone or email, which helps them make a well-informed and rational decision, particularly regarding the nuances of panel placement.

Solar-Powered Railway

Another fascinating project in this field is the world’s first railway line to be powered directly by a solar farm. Although solar-powered trains had already been commissioned in India, the British project is unique in its own right.

Here’s a brief timeline of events. In 2017, the Liverpool Echo reported on the plans, and by 2019, Engadget was reporting on their implementation. “Passengers will be able to travel to work on sunshine,” as the Liverpool Echo poetically put it, adding that it would require investment from Merseyrail and was being lobbied for by the charity ’10:10′.

Environmental groups in Liverpool and Wirral identified as many as 22 potential sites that could be used for solar farms. During the planning stage in 2017, it was calculated that this could meet 20 percent of the Merseyrail network’s energy needs.

Ultimately, the project went ahead as planned, and in 2019, around 100 new panels began powering a section of the railway. While several railway stations in Britain were already using solar power, Merseyside admirably took up the initiative to power the lines themselves. It was then that the government announced ambitious plans to completely phase out diesel-only trains from the rail network by 2040.

Solar panels are becoming increasingly popular among those who are environmentally conscious or simply want to save on electricity bills.
