Entry to the park and to the play area is free. The park is open all year and closed at night; the walled garden keeps its own, shorter hours, and the caf\u00e9 inside it operates on its own schedule, so check before making a special trip for either. The Rathbones bought the freehold in 1809, and after William Rathbone IV&#8217;s death his widow Hannah Mary rebuilt much of the house in the fashionable &#8220;Strawberry Hill&#8221; Gothic style; the building survives today as a Grade II* listed structure and passed to the University of Liverpool in the 1940s. The parkland itself was sold to Liverpool Corporation in 1897 for \u00a313,000, and the Rathbones attached a condition to the sale: the land had to be maintained as open space or recreation ground for the general public.
