A new factory opened in Liverpool in 2018. It belongs to a company that has been around for a long time. We are talking about Domino Printing Sciences (abbreviated as Domino), one of the leaders in the production of special liquids, in particular ink for printers. Learn more about the expansion of the company’s factory, some important engineering decisions and efforts to preserve the environment at liverpoolname.
History of the enterprise expansion
Domino Printing Sciences has been around since 1978. For its 40th anniversary, the company set up a new factory in Liverpool to improve productivity and capacity. The investments were costly, but the results turned out worth it. As a result, a 16,000 square metres production site has appeared in Liverpool, which will help Domino to do its work much faster.
In essence, it was just a 5-fold expansion of the existing plant, which increased the number of jobs by 19 (to 88). Now, the plant has a production area, laboratories for quality control, specialised facilities for staff training, administrative offices, conference rooms as well as huge warehouses. From there, the finished products go either immediately to the company’s customers, or to intermediaries, that is, to distributors from all over the world.
Important engineering decisions
The new plant also uses the latest technologies, including
- In-line mixing. At the new factory, different materials or components are mixed directly on the production line, precisely calculating the dosage, which is very important for the quality of the final product.
- Palletizing systems. It refers to the use of automated systems for assembling products on pallets in accordance with certain standards and requirements. It simplifies the process of packing and unloading products and can increase the efficiency of the production process.
- Robotised material processing.
- Automated bottling lines with high-speed rotating filling heads.

As you can see, the new plant isn’t just bigger than the previous one but also uses more modern engineering solutions. As Domino CEO Nigel Bond has noted, these changes will allow the company’s customers to be even more competitive in their markets. He also noted that Liverpool had been the epicentre of the firm’s business for the past 35 years. Even though the headquarters of Domino Printing Sciences is located in Cambridge!
Serial production system from partners
The fact that this company has really huge potential and authority in the world is proven by its cooperation with INDEFF. The latter described the cooperation with Domino in one of the cases of their achievements, noting that their customer needed full control over the production process. INDEFF has developed a mass production system, integrating it with the Wonderware MES system for the entire enterprise.
Note. Wonderware MES (Manufacturing Execution System) is part of a software suite aimed at optimising and managing manufacturing operations. This system provides tools for solving tasks related to data collection and analysis.
Therefore, thanks to this collaboration, Domino can develop key settings or parameters for production regardless of the specific equipment used on site.
Domino and the environment

The building, which has appeared in Liverpool, also fits into the concept of sustainable development. Thus, it takes into account various environmentally-oriented solutions and technologies that are used to reduce the negative impact on the environment. In particular,
- Roof photoelectric elements, that is panels for generating solar energy. They enable the use of a renewable source of energy, reducing dependence on traditional ones.
- Water drains. They are used to manage rainwater and surface water. The water is not drained into the sewage system but is directed to nearby reservoirs. This helps reduce the risk of flooding and helps maintain the natural water balance.
Thus, the harmful impact on the environment on the part of the enterprise is significantly reduced.
The Domino company even created a new position, Group Environmental Impact Manager. Jessica Büttner was the first to take it. Together with the company’s management, she took responsibility for product life cycle assessment. It was done as part of the company’s strategy of corporate social responsibility and sustainable development. Another similar position was taken by Thomas Guerriero in 2023, who began working with the client base to help customers reduce production waste and improve environmental performance.
The introduction of the new position is in line with the company’s aim to introduce engineering solutions that help global factories reduce waste. Since then, Domino has acquired specialists who monitor the implementation of the company’s initiatives, which seek to reduce harmful emissions and contribute to the development of a responsible society.
