The concept of a resort includes not only beaches but also city entertainment, health centres as well as outdoor park areas. By the way, the etymology of the word indicates a frequently visited place (‘from Old French resortir, from re- ‘again’ + sortir ‘come or go out’’ – source). In Liverpool, resort areas are equipped with many technological solutions and innovative entertainment. Learn more about them at liverpoolname.
Video carousel in Clayton Square
As BBC reported, one of the most innovative solutions of the city resort area on the Mersey River is located on Clayton Square. In the warm season, people are offered to watch archival or historical footage here. For example, in 2009, tourists and local residents could watch footage of gatherings on the occasion of some holidays or festivals from the 60s, 70s and 80s of the last century. In 2014, the audience watched excerpts from the BBC North West Film Archive.
What does it look like? In July or August, Places Of Public Resort offers to watch a kind of video carousel on a huge screen. This screen was created by the efforts of the BBC, Liverpool City Council and the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Here, people can scroll through archival footage to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the past and events that took place at different times. This innovation presents you with a new interactive experience, allowing you to enjoy memories via photos and videos.
For example, thanks to responsive software, people could watch
- opening of the Liverpool International Garden Festival
- a Birdman Rally in Sefton Park, where participants tried to take to the air with the help of homemade devices
- street parties
- mobile fairs, etc.
The Big Screen often presented news reports filmed at a time when television was still developing and the Internet didn’t exist yet. For some videos, it was their second demonstration after the TV one. This exciting innovative project was implemented in cooperation with the city authorities. It evokes nostalgia for those old days when people didn’t have so many distractions and often got together.
It is worth noting that this is part of the UK Live Sites project. There are about 20 of them in the country and Liverpool has been participating in the program since 2004. The city willingly supports innovative interactive projects and art programmes.
The Big Screen network doesn’t demonstrate commercial advertising or campaigns and is free of charge. It is intended as a creative, cultural and public platform to show short films, video art, BBC programmes, sports and cultural events.
Outdoor park and beach areas

Liverpool has plenty of outdoor spaces.
- Crosby Beach with an observation deck and a hundred cast iron statues by Anthony Gormley. The location also opens a breath-taking view of the nearby wind farms and ships passing by. Many people like to enjoy the amazing sunsets here.
- Wirral with its 8 beaches and 4 swimming areas. It is a peninsula to the west of Liverpool, although some consider it as part of the city. Wirral is famous for nature, parks, beaches and cultural attractions. Here, you can find historical buildings and enjoy beautiful landscapes.
- Sefton Park. We wrote about it in detail here.
- Southport with its famous Rotten Row, the site of the annual flower show and the Botanic Gardens.
The authorities of Liverpool urge people to respect nature and not to litter in such places. When visiting the coast and beaches, you should take into account local regulations. For example, you should swim only where it is allowed. Such places will continue to heal visitors’ spirits and bodies if only they follow local rules.
Fascinating innovative resorts

In one of Liverpool’s popular tourist spots, you can take a photo against the background of angel wings, and thus, turn into this creature for a few seconds. Usually, such interesting solutions become popular for those who post photos on social networks. They are also admired by children.
There are also places in the city where you can improve your health. One of them is the award-winning Spaces at The Spine. It is located in the north home of the Royal College of Physicians. Here, you can also enjoy a perfect view of Liverpool and the River Mersey.
The main purpose of The Spine is to help you improve health using high standards, air, water, food, movement, sunshine, etc. Visitors can improve both their emotional and physical state. In addition, one of the most important principles here is eco-friendliness. Spaces at The Spine gives you an opportunity to communicate and collaborate. Local innovations (in particular, in a multi-level recreation area) are used to make people happier and healthier.
