Liverpool’s parks come from two impulses, and this list holds both. Sefton Park, Princes Park and Newsham Park & Garden are Victorian pleasure grounds funded by selling building plots around their edges — the villas that ring them paid for the landscape inside. Calderstones Park and Croxteth Hall And Country Park came the other way, as private estates the city inherited whole, with their houses, walled gardens and old timber intact. Two entries are not parks at all: Liverpool Waterfront and The Otterspool Promenade are stone and grass along the Mersey, where the river does the work lawns and lakes do elsewhere.
They differ in scale, ground and reach: woodland rides and a river valley at Croxteth Hall And Country Park, a raised terrace and open turf at Stanley Park, everything minutes from the gate at Greenbank Park Play Area. Arrival sorts them further — Sefton Park, Calderstones Park and The Otterspool Promenade each sit within a walk of a Merseyrail station, while the northern and eastern parks are bus journeys.

With a small child, Greenbank Park Play Area is the easy answer: playground beside a still lake, level ground, nothing far from the gate. Runners get measured loops — flat and beginner-friendly at Walton Hall Park, a Saturday parkrun at Princes Park, real gradient on the carriage drive at Sefton Park. Picnics and groups belong on the open turf at Stanley Park. For water, The Otterspool Promenade faces west over the estuary. Bad weather makes the glasshouses and walled gardens the point; heat sends you into the woods at Croxteth Hall And Country Park.
What the list does not settle: cycling, beyond the riverside link at The Otterspool Promenade; fenced areas for dogs, which appear nowhere; and evening lighting — Newsham Park & Garden is a daylight walk once you leave the main drives. Step-free ground is generous on the promenades and surfaced drives; Fairy Glen at Sefton Park is rock, steps and slope. And ten places tilt south and riverside: neighbourhood parks further out are absent.
